China offering coronavirus candidate vaccines to state workers, Global Times says

first_imgTopics : China is offering candidate vaccines for the new coronavirus to employees at state-owned firms travelling overseas, as it seeks more data on their efficacy, state media Global Times reported on Thursday. No proven vaccines have been developed yet for the virus, although mass trials for a number of candidate vaccines are expected to get underway soon in countries around the world.Employees in China can volunteer to take one of two vaccine candidates being developed by affiliates of state-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), the newspaper backed by the Communist Party reported, citing a written notice sent to the state-owned companies. It did not name the two candidate vaccines, which are being tested on more than 1,000 people each and are among five candidates China has in clinical trials that showed “no distinct adverse reaction” in the first two phases of human trials. The plan is also part of China’s effort to resume overseas projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative, a scheme to link China with Asia, Europe and beyond through large-scale infrastructure projects, according to the notice.”For better prevention and quicker recovery of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects, Sinopharm has given priority to supporting workers intending to go overseas to vaccinate for urgent needs,” it said. Before regulatory approval for sales, a vaccine normally has to go through large-scale, “Phase 3” trials to observe to what extent they provide protection against infection.center_img That ideally requires exposing people in a real-life environment with relatively high infection risk.China, where the virus first originated in late December, has seen a sharp drop in the number of new cases, making it less favorable as a late-stage clinical trial site.Vaccinating people travelling abroad, especially those going to high-risk areas, is one option for conducting a Phase 3 trial, Zhu Fengcai, deputy director of a local branch of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told financial media service Caixin in April. last_img read more

Alex Shelley returns to Ring of Honor wrestling after the toughest time of his life

first_img“He didn’t have to write that. It was just a really kind thing to read. Just from anybody. It doesn’t have to be Will Ospreay. Just to hear that or see someone go out of their way to move the muscle in their hands to actually type that out. I really appreciated it.”It is those close bonds that Shelley truly appreciates at this point in his life and career.“I think that’s one of the beauties of the day and age we live in,” said Shelley. “People can say that. I would have never been able to say that when I was coming up in the wrestling business to a guy like Reckless Youth. There’s no way to do that. I think that’s one of the things that’s really cool about the industry as a whole right now.” Shelley’s year away from wrestling was the toughest point in his life.“I was in school full-time studying for a career in physical therapy and I can’t describe the kind of stress that I put on myself by doing that and trying to wrestle full-time with Ring of Honor,” explained Shelley.“My head just wasn’t in a good spot in terms of producing the type of wrestling I’d be most proud of.”FOUR TITLE MATCHES WILL TAKE PLACE AUGUST 9TH IN TORONTO AT #SUMMERSUPERCARD !! It just so happened that his contract with Ring of Honor was also coming to an end at the same time. But he knew he needed to finish what he started when it came to school. Personal matters made it harder as he went through a divorce at the same time he left wrestling. Many parts of his life were out of his hands as he lived in guest rooms or a hotel while working 10-12 hour days at a hospital for no money.Shelly admits that there were dark days filled with anxiety and depression, where he was losing his identity not being able to do something he loved: pro wrestling.“Everything snowballed and came to a head and I realized there’s only so much I can control,” said Shelley. “That’s what it came down to is literally every day, waking up and thinking I’m just going to do the best I can today.“I’m going to weather it. It’s not going to kill me. I’m going to get through it and it’s going to be really awesome at some point but it’s not right now.”MORE: Predictions for the entire WWE SummerSlam cardBetter days were on the horizon as he earned his four-year degree and life got back on track for the 36-year-old.“My mental state is really good,” said Shelley. “I got through the hardest period of my life and I grew from it. You’re kind of forced to grow from it or you’re not. You can choose not to and you can just become depressed and trapped in whatever your reality is but I feel pretty good about everything, wrestling included.”Almost a year to the day since stepping away from wrestling, Shelley returned to the ROH ring, teaming up with Jay Lethal and Jonathan Gresham to beat ‘The Kingdom’ made up of Taven, TK O’Ryan and Vinny Marseglia. He was officially back.“I can’t describe the feeling I’ve had being around the guys at Ring of Honor,” explained Shelley. “I missed those guys a lot. We’re talking some of these guys I’ve known half my life and, to me, that’s crazy and when I left a year ago, I didn’t know if I would see them again because I didn’t know where I would land if I went back to wrestling. It’s really cool for me to see everybody.”Shelley had plenty of success in tag teams, including as one-half of the the Motor City Machine Guns alongside Chris Sabin and becoming a three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight tag team champion during his time in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Now he’s looking to grab a major singles title – the ROH world championship – against Taven at Summer Showdown. The event will stream live Friday night starting at 7:30p ET at ROHHonorClub.com and on the ROH app.Typically there is some angst going into a match, but Shelley only has high praise for the polarizing champion.“Your Legend vs My Legacy” pic.twitter.com/T9FCEiyFfD— ROH Wrestling (@ringofhonor) August 7, 2019“I think he’s awesome,” said Shelley. “I know that’s not a very good pro wrestling answer to give but I really do think he’s awesome. The guy has worked all over the world and I find a lot of similarities between myself and Matt Taven in terms of where we left our mark.”He’s gone to CMLL and he’s been a star down there. He’s gone to New Japan and I know for a fact he impressed some of the officials there. He’s a guy who has sacrificed a lot for wrestling and I really respect that.“Yeah, I get it, he’s kind of a d—head but at the same time, you can’t deny the guy has put the work in. He really has and he performs at the highest athletic level. I can’t say enough good things about him. I hate to gush all over him because he’s champion and I want to beat him.”Shelley is in a better place in his life than he was not too long ago. But the return to wrestling comes at the right time, when him expressing himself in the ring can further help his healing process.“Freedom to express yourself and the freedom to be yourself, I think everybody wants that. Everybody wants to be loved for who they are in the end. Everybody wants to be accepted without having to try to put on some sort of facade.”As it relates to wrestling, I’m just looking forward to the challenge and then, conceptually speaking, approaching things in a different manner. Having new ideas, having new forms of attack.“As far as having a new life and a new state of mind and having a new career path and having a new way to approach wrestling, yeah, fine, let’s burn it all to the ground and build it back up.”Shelley would love to wrestle full-time again but wants to give physical therapy a real chance while continuing his career in the ring. After all, helping people also aided in his own personal issues.“Honestly, working in physical therapy at that point was a godsend, just being able to help somebody learn to walk again,” explained Shelley. “These people are debilitated, they’re in pain and to be able to put their problems ahead of my own, put them at the forefront and help them feel less pain or feel like they’re not trapped inside their own body was probably what I looked forward to most for 8-10 months.”Shelley credits his friends in wrestling across the globe, including the likes of Chris Sabin and Jay Lethal to Karl Anderson and Kazuchika Okada, for providing support or simply checking in on him during those dark days.Plus, he came across a note from Will Ospreay that had a profound effect on him.“He just talked about how he watched me growing up and I thought that was really kind of him,” explained Shelley. “It was right after I left wrestling. It talked about me having an impact on him. I have met Will maybe a half dozen times and he’s always been really nice but we’ve never really had a chance to sit down and really bond. Alex Shelley is returning to wrestling after a year-long hiatus. Africa Gets Cutting-Edge Solar Broadband, Phones From Microsoft

first_imgTags:#broadband#Internet#Microsoft Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Related Posts Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Microsoft has launched a Kenyan pilot network of solar-powered towers that tap into unlicensed “white space” frequencies to provide wireless connectivity to rural communities in the east African nation. Microsoft also said it would contribute “tens of millions of smart devices” in consumers and small businesses by 2016, with a phone it co-designed with Huawei.Microsoft’s work is being done as part of its Microsoft4Afrika Initiative, which aims to bring 1 million African businesses online and assist up to 200,000 Africans by teaching them entrepreneurship and other business skills. The technology deployed in Africa could be eventually deployed in the U.S. So-called “white space” frequencies are the Wild West of radio, unlicensed spectrum not currently being used. As such, they run free of interference, which can improve their range and performance. Microsoft is teaming with Adaptrum to develop the base stations, while trying to convince local governments to adopt the technology continent-wide. Up to 6,000 people will eventually be served by the stations. In the U.S., the technology is slowly making its way through the FCC, as long as it doen’t impede licensed frequencies. The FCC is collecting “databases” of the available frequencies, so radio devices can stick to these white spaces.First World DisconnectSomewhat crassly, the video also includes scenes of Microsoft executives handing out Surface tablets to rural African students. The disparity between the brightly colored tablets and the packed dirt floors of the school does make one wonder whether Microsoft’s money could be better spent, until the students begin quickly flicking through the tablets, and apparently start learning. Indigo Telecom chairman’s metaphor of a “mist of information” floating over the school suddenly seems less hyperbolic. And yes, the kids can apparently use Windows 8.Microsoft will also co-develop a low-cost Windows Phone 8 phone with Huawei, the Asian developer who has specialized in low-cost phones. The phone looks like any other Windows Phone: it’s a customized version of the Ascend W1, launched at CES last month: 4-inch 480 x 800 touch LCD, 5 Mpixel camera, dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and Adreno 305 GPU. More importantly, however, it can deliver up to 420 hours of standby time and 560 minutes of 3G talk time via aggressive power saving. The phone will initially be available in Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa later this month. The Huawei 4Afrika phone, which is the first in a series of smart devices branded with “4Afrika,” will be targeted toward university students, developers and first-time smartphone users, the company said. It’s not the first smartphone designed for the continent. Safaricom and Intel launched the Yolo in Nairobi last month, powered by Kenya’s Safaricom.Microsoft’s Charity Track RecordGranted, it appears that Microsoft’s 4Afrika Initiative will place millions of Windows Phones and Surface devices into Africa as part of the program through the next few years. Cynics will chuckle snidely and call this dumping failed products into a market where they’ll never be seen again. That’s not the way it should be seen. Whether charity or investment, few companies take the time, or spend the money, to improve developing nations. Last September, Microsoft said it would “close the opportunity divide” through YouthSpark, funded by $500 million over three years.Between July 2011 and June 2012, Microsoft gave $900 million in cash and software to more than 62,200 nonprofits worldwide, Microsoft representatives said. Of this total, nearly $100 million in cash alone was donated to charities through the employee giving program. Since 1983, Microsoft employees have raised $1 billion in cash (inclusive of the company match) for more than 31,000 nonprofits and community organizations around the world. Kenya’s Daily Nationreported that Microsoft will spend the equivalent of $75 million as part of the 4Afrika Initative. That’s 6.52 billion Kenyan shillings. That kind of investment goes a long way in Africa.(Updated at 3:39 PM with additional comment from Microsoft.)center_img What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … markhachman You might think of this as a charity. It’s not. In fact, this project highlights an interesting dichotomy with how some people see efforts by charities like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, plus celebrities like Bono and Bob Geldof, who allegedly collect money for Africa, but don’t actually provide the means for Africa to grow – turning Africa into a “theme park for good intentions.”For Microsoft, this is about investment. “When we look at the world, many see China or the BRIC countries as the next big opportunity for growth,” Ali Faramawy, corporate vice president, for Microsoft Middle East & Africa, wrote in a blog post Tuesday. “At Microsoft, we view the African continent as a game-changer in the global economy.”So what is Microsoft doing besides just donating money? Building.Kenya Gets More BroadbandIn collaboration with the government of Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communications and Indigo Telecom Ltd., Microsoft said it would launch a pilot project, dubbed “Mawingu,” delivering low-cost wireless broadband access to previously unserved locations near Nanyuki and Kalema, Kenya. The base stations use solar panels, often mounted on roofs, and conventional TV aerials, according to a video of the technology. The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

Working with Powergrades in DaVinci Resolve

first_imgGive your video footage unique looks quickly – color grade like a pro! In this post we show you how to create and use Powergrades in DaVinci Resolve.Powergrades in DaVinci Resolve are simply saved looks (comprised of a single or group of nodes to create that look) which you can save and then quickly apply to any shot at any time. Powergrades are often time saving preset vignettes, film stock emulations or specific ‘film legacy’ looks like cross processing, super 8 film bleach bypass, etc.To understand how to work with Powergrades in Resolve we’ll first create a look, save it and then export it to share with others. Finally we’ll import a powergrade back into DaVinci Resolve. How to Save a Powergrade in ResolveThe cool thing about Powergrades is how easy they are to share, between projects and of course, across the Internet. In order to save your own Powergrades first select the grade you want to save by right clicking on the image in the Viewer in the Color page and selecting ‘Grab Still’, or press Command-Option-G.This adds the still into the Gallery. Here you can rename it as well as organize it into a specific folder if you have several saved grades. It is in the Gallery that you will also find all of the preset looks that ship with Resolve (and Resolve Lite). If you want to see how a specific look has been created you can right click on its image in the gallery and select ‘Display Node Graph‘. This will open up a new window which reveals how the look was created node by node.Export a Powergrade in DaVinci ResolveTo export a Powergrade from DaVinci Resolve select the grade in the Gallery and right-click on it, then choose Export. Name it, choose the file type you prefer and press Export.Import a Powergrade into DaVinci Resolve 9It is very easy to install a Powergrade in DaVinci Resolve. Simply download a DRX file (which is the file Resolve creates to holds the grade metadata) to your computer. Then in Resolve’s Powergrade section of the Gallery page (or in the gallery section in the middle of the Color page) simply right click and choose ‘Import’. Next, navigate to your .DRX file (which might be accompanied by a still image of what the grade looks like) select it and you’re done. You have now successfully imported a powergrade into DaVinci Resolve. To apply the grade to your shot, simply drag it from the Gallery Store in the middle of the Color page, onto your first node and it will replace all the nodes in your grade with those from the Powergrade. If you wish to add the Powergrade to your existing grade just right-click on the Powergrade and choose ‘Append Node Graph’. This will add the Powergrade to the end of your node tree.Where Can I Download Powergrades for DaVinci Resolve? There are a couple of places online that you can buy Powergrades to download and use in your projects.Denver Riddle from Color Grading Central has a $99 – 25 Luster Powergrade Pack (with 4 bonus grades) which features looks like Blockbuster, Cross Processing, Epic, Bleach Bypass and 2 and 3 stripe Technicolor grades.Bob Sliga has a $99 pack called Pro Looks Powergrades of 135 looks and 42 tutorials these are available to download from Class on Demand.Ben Brownlee has two volumes of ‘Film Wash Color Effects‘ for DaVinci Resolve with 65 and 45 looks respectively, as well as tutorials on how to make the most of them. Each Film Wash Volume is on sale for £40.If you keep a sharp eye on the Looks section of Lift Gamma Gain you might also find a few free experimental looks uploaded by colorists from around the world.last_img read more

Trudeau expected to shuffle federal cabinet Monday source

first_imgOTTAWA — A senior government official says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to shuffle the federal cabinet on Monday. This will be the third time the prime minister switches up his roster this year.In January, Trudeau moved Jody Wilson-Raybould to veterans affairs from the justice portfolio, which went to David Lametti. The prime minister made a few more changes earlier this month to fill the void left by Wilson-Raybould after she resigned from cabinet amid the ongoing SNC-Lavalin controversy.A few days after the mini-shuffle, Jane Philpott also stepped down from cabinet, saying she had lost confidence in the government over its handling of the SNC-Lavalin issue.Philpott had served as president of the Treasury Board. The Canadian Presslast_img read more
