Stealing Christmas spirit

first_imgWHITTIER – For the past two weeks, it has looked a lot like Christmas in James Creighton’s front yard, with snowflakes swirling in a huge globe, reindeer pulling a sleigh and a Grinch dressed as Santa on the front porch. But on Sunday morning, the family woke up to find a real-life Grinch had stolen the 8-foot globe from the front yard of the Reichling Lane home in West Whittier. “We are devastated because that snow globe was so awesome. It really made it look like it was snowing in the front yard,” said Creighton. With the $125 decoration gone, Creighton and his wife and grandson didn’t have the heart to keep the rest up. On Monday night, with neighbors looking on, the family packed up many of their other decorations, including the reindeer and a train set with a city around it, and put them away back in storage. “I didn’t want to get up every morning and see if something else was missing,” said Creighton. All that remains now is a row of candy canes, the Grinch on the front porch, roof lights, two 10 Commandment tablets and signs saying “Yard art missing due to thieves.” Teresa Gonzalez, a neighbor on Reichling, said after the theft, her family will keep a close eye on their outdoor decorations this year. For now, she misses seeing the cheerful holiday display at night. “It’s so sad, because it was really pretty to look out the window and see the snow,” she said. “For someone to do this at Christmas time, a time of loving and giving, shows that they have no heart.” As for the Creighton family, they are still deciding whether to do it next year. “We have done it for six years and never had a problem, but after this I don’t know,” said James Creighton. “If we get a new fence around the yard, maybe we will.” [email protected] (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3028 AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREBlues bury Kings early with four first-period goals 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
