Sachin Tendulkar was relieved after his 100th ton: Rohit Sharma

first_imgIt has been exactly four years to the day that Sachin Tendulkar smashed his 100th international hundred to end a period of agony for the Indian team, fans and himself. After months of waiting, the milestone was finally achieved in an Asia Cup ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma, who was slotted to bat at No.6 in that match, vividly recalled the historic moment.”It was a great feeling,” Rohit told “We were all eagerly waiting for him to get to that mark. We wanted him to get that 100 more than he did himself. Sachin was someone who focussed on the process a lot more than the milestone.Watch @ImRo45 talk about the historic moment from 2012 when @sachin_rt completed 100 hundreds #ThisDayThatYear BCCI (@BCCI) March 16, 2016″But we as his teammates, were wishing that he got his 100th 100 soon. Everyone enjoyed that moment. We had a celebration in the dressing-room and at the hotel. He was so relieved after that. All his hard work paid off. It is a great milestone to have because no one will ever reach that milestone again.” It was a long wait for everyone. Tendulkar had made his 99th hundred against South Africa in the Nagpur Test on March 12, 2011. For a whole year after that, the media and fans waited with bated breath. He came close a few times but fell agonisingly short. Those were the days when media houses across the world waited in anticipation of a hundred that at one time seemed elusive. Tendulkar was not getting any younger and he had started to pick and choose the ODIs he wanted to play. He had a torrid time during the Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia and murmurs on his retirement were beginning to grow a year after India had lifted the World Cup at home.advertisementNot just the fans, the team was equally anxious about the milestone. Rohit summed up the mood in the dressing-room perfectly.”Every tournament we played after his 99th hundred, we wanted him to get that 100th hundred. Every innings he played after that, we watched all of his innings whethere they were Tests or ODIs.”This is one of his greatest achievements. I was lucky enough to be a part of that game. It was disappointing because we lost that game but we had a little cake-cutting ceremony in the dressing-room.”Rohit said he was lucky to be part of that historic game.”It was great to watch. I have not seen all his 100 hundreds but I was lucky enough to watch a few. I was so excited because I was next in to bat and as soon as he got that single, we were so happy. All of India wanted him to get that 100,” he said.Tendulkar went on to retire from ODIs at the end of 2012 and brought the curtains down on his international career in 2013 after becoming the first man to appear in 200 Tests.last_img read more
