But after I’ve filed, I’m Googling like crazy. Were my impressions similar to those of my counterparts? When it’s theatre I’m reviewing, the first critic I seek out is Colin Thomas. Thomas has been a theatre reviewer at Vancouver’s alt-weekly The Georgia Straight since I arrived in this city – and long before. He is a respected fixture, reviewing two to three shows a week with solid theatre knowledge, encyclopedic context, a sharp eye, fearless opinions – and fine writing to boot.Thomas stunned the local arts community this week with a blog post: “I just got fired from The Georgia Straight. Thirty years. No warning. No compensation,” it began. Advertisement Advertisement Twitter Facebook I know Thomas a bit, just from running into him at performances. I know him much better as a reader. I consider him the best theatre reviewer in Vancouver. In his post, Thomas detailed a meeting with two Straight editors – both of whom I also know (it’s a small community) – in which he says he was told letting him go was not their decision; they had fought it. As for the reason, it was suggested there may have been a confluence of factors – financial difficulties, and he’s not on staff, so his job is easier to cut – but also that there had been complaints from some companies. “You know: that you never like anything,” Thomas wrote in his account of the conversation.

Facebook Advertisement Two years ago, just before the Baroness Von Sketch Show premiered on the Canadian broadcaster CBC, the series released its first sketch segment online, a preview of the series its four co-creators (the Baronesses) had spent the previous year developing. The reaction to “Locker Room,” which depicts a utopian gym locker room of body positivity for post-40-year-olds, was swift and overwhelmingly positive: The next day, Meredith MacNeill, one of the Baronesses, was taken aback by the comments rolling in, the friends tagging each other on Facebook.“As a person in comedy, once you’re creating, you have to put blinders on and just work on the thing you’re working on and not even look at the outside world,” Aurora Browne, a fellow Baroness, said recently. “All of the sudden, we came out of the creative hole and we were like, ‘Wait a minute…’” MacNeill added. The response confirmed they were onto something with their relatable, gently absurd humor—and for the four Baronesses, relatability is tantamount.Baroness Von Sketch Show, the Canadian sketch comedy series that was picked up by IFC earlier this year, is the collective brainchild of the comedians and actors MacNeill, Browne, Carolyn Taylor, and Jennifer Whalen. They were in the midst of pre-production for the series’ third season when we connected over the phone, just a week after it had debuted on IFC. I have a worldview. I think I’m a more interesting person than I was at 25, but suddenly, I have nowhere to put this.’”READ MORE Twitter Advertisement

A Russian Antonov An-124 heavy lift aircraft lands in Iqaluit MondayKent Driscoll APTN National NewsIqaluit plane spotters were in their glory Monday as one of the world’s largest aircrafts came to town. The Russian Antonov An-124 arrived to deliver a helicopter that will help bring power back to the nearby community of Pangnirtung. On April 2, Pangnirtung, located 45 minutes northeast of Iqaluit, lost most of its power plant to fire.Back-up power was restored days later but residents were limited to the amount of power they could use including stove top cooking rather than ovens and people in the community of 1,500 are only permitted to do laundry in shifts to conserve energy.Schools, the health centre and government offices only just opened its doors, with limited services, this week. The Ruslan’s massive cargo space and lift were able to carry both the Erickson S-64 Skycrane helicopter and a new generator for Pangnirtung. The helicopter will be reassembled in Iqaluit and will transport the new generating equipment for Pang. The giant Antonov could not deliver its cargo directly to the community because the runway is too short. It is expected to take the helicopter four trips over two days to complete the drop-off.After that, power workers will install and test the new equipment, so Pangnirtung will be on temporary generators for a while longer. In the “kneeling” configuration, the cockpit flips up and the fuselage dips to the tarmac, allowing the massive jetliner to deploy the S-64 Skycrane helicopter.Erickson s-64 Skycrane:The helicopter was originally manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft as the S-64A Skycrane, and sold to the Army as the CH-54A Tarhe. The CH-54 performed with an outstanding service record in Vietnam, supporting the Army’s First Cavalry Division, Airmobile by retrieving over 380 damaged aircraft, saving an estimated $210 million. The S-64 was the first helicopter built as a flying crane, with an aft-facing pilot station that gives the pilot an unobstructed view of the load being carried and full positive control of the aircraft during precision operations. “Premier (Scott) Moe and Premier (Brad) Wall before him had a bit of a lonely battle but now they’ve got reinforcements. And my message to Canadians is come 2019, the battle will be won,” Scheer said. The federal government’s new carbon pricing system comes into effect in 2019 in provinces that don’t have carbon pricing mechanisms of their own. The carbon price outlined by Ottawa starts at a minimum of $20 a tonne and rises $10 annually until 2022.But Scheer told reporters that government officials are saying the tax would need to rise to $100 per tonne for it to be effective at reducing carbon emissions, and he says the federal environment department is planning for a carbon tax of $300 per tonne.“So we know Justin Trudeau will raise the carbon tax higher. His experts are telling him to. His own government departments are telling him to,” Scheer said.“At that price home heating bills will rise by more than $1,000 a year and gas prices would go up by more than 60 cents a litre.”When asked by a reporter about his own plan to fight climate change, Scheer responded that the Conservatives’ plan will help reduce global emissions by capitalizing on Canada’s clean technology and cleaner energy, which he said will also keep manufacturing jobs in Canada instead of moving to countries without those things.Canada’s former parliamentary budget officer predicted in a report in April that the federal government’s carbon tax will cut economic growth by 0.5 per cent or $10 billion dollars when it’s fully implemented in 2022, and would generate significant revenues. However, Jean-Denis Frechette’s report noted the impact on the economy will depend on how those revenues are used.Trudeau says Ottawa will return 90 per cent of the money it collects from a carbon tax to Canadians.Saskatchewan is asking its Court of Appeal to rule on whether the carbon tax is unconstitutional and has argued its climate change plan is enough to reduce emissions and a carbon tax would hurt the Saskatchewan economy.Scheer, who represents Regina_Qu’Appelle in Parliament, said Saskatchewan’s fight against the tax gets easier as more provinces elect governments that also oppose it, like Ontario and New Brunswick did in 2018. REGINA, S.K. – Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer welcomed 2019 with a warning that if Canadians re-elect Justin Trudeau this year, the federal carbon tax that’s going to take effect will only climb.“Canadians know what Justin Trudeau is going to do. Now that his carbon tax is here, it’s only going to go up. And if he gets re-elected in 10 months, it will go up even more,” Scheer said during a New Year’s Day news conference in a Giant Tiger store in Regina.“This time next year I plan on being able to tell Canadians that Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax is a thing of the past.”
Mumbai: Actor Akshay Kumar is on a roll, and when is he ever not? After signing up for a web series, the superstar is now getting ready for his next release Kesari. Excerpts from the interview: Q. There is so much happening in your career. Your leap into the digital domain has created a nationwide stir. What made you take this plunge? Honestly, my son Aarav was one of the main driving factors for me to think in this direction and move into the digital space. It’s where the youth is hooked onto and it is here that I wish to create something extraordinary and connect with them. It’s going to be high octane action is all I can reveal as of now. Also Read – Hilarie Burton, Jeffery Dean Morgan tie the knot Q. Do you think the future of the movie-going experience lies in the digital space? Or do you believe, as I do, that the magic of the movie theatre can’t be eradicated? I’m of mixed opinion here. The actor in me would want and love to believe the magic of the movie theatres never fades away but having said that I’m also aware that a lot of content consumption is being done in the digital space and that is something that cannot be ignored. And if I can get a share of both the pies, then why not? Also Read – ‘Vaastav’ gave me the real sense of being an actor: Sanjay Dutt on film’s 20-year anniversaryQ. You had three major successes in 2018. Kesari is your first release for 2019, and it’s looking like a blockbuster. What are your expectations regarding Kesari? Kesari is an extremely special film for me, my first war drama. I am very emotional about it. The answer on why I picked this film is in your question itself. I was amazed that such a brilliant and brave story has such little recognition and it’s a story I’m really proud and excited about to share with the audiences. Q. In Mission Mangal, you play a real-life astronaut. And there are several interesting female actors sharing the limelight with you. Would it be correct to say this is your first film in recent times where the women have important roles to play? I would like to correct you here. In Mission Mangal, I do not play an astronaut but a scientist and yes, I worked with an interesting mix of female co-actors in it. Well, it’s actually very subjective and never been a conscious decision. I pick films which excite me. For instance, I was also a part of Naam Shabana, where I most certainly wasn’t the central character and my female co-actor Taapsee Pannu had a much more important role to play. So that’s how it is.

Islamabad: The Pakistan Army will raise another division-size special force to protect Chinese nationals and projects under the CPEC, military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor has said, days after the brazen terror attack on a luxury hotel in Balochistan. Describing the USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a living example of deep-rooted friendship between Pakistan and China, Major General Ghafoor, Director General of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), said the Pakistan Army was fully determined to ensure the security of the project. Talking to the Chinese media in Rawalpindi on Saturday, he said the Pakistan military had raised a whole division-size force to protect the project and they were planning to deploy another division for this purpose. Earlier reports said a Special Security Division (SSD) comprising 9,000 Pakistan Army soldiers and 6,000 para-military forces personnel has been set up for the security of the CPEC project and Chinese nationals working on it. Ghafoor said Pakistan faced a very challenging war against terrorism during the last two decades, and now the security situation was under control. Talking about the CPEC role in the country, he said the economic prosperity brought about by the CPEC will fail the motives of terrorists, as with the success of project more employment and business opportunities will be unveiled and with more economic opportunities coming in, people’s lifestyle will improve and inimical elements will fail gradually, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported. He claimed that the security situation in Balochistan had improved since the launch of the CPEC and now there was a better infrastructure, as many Chinese projects were underway, and with every coming day security, development and investment situation will get better. The Pakistan Army spokesman’s comments came days after terrorists attacked the Pearl Continental luxury hotel in the port city of Gwadar in the restive Balochistan province, killing at least eight persons, including four civilians and a Pakistan Navy soldier. The attack was claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army — one of the most-organised terrorist groups of Baloch nationalists fighting against security forces. The group was also involved in the terrorist attack at the Chinese consulate in Karachi last year. Ghafoor said: “Today’s Gwadar is not what it used to be two years ago and in future it will be on a par with the ports of developed countries”. Gwadar port is one of the focal points of the CPEC with many Chinese workers from other provinces of Pakistan working at the port. China is investing heavily in Balochistan under the CPEC.

MADRID — Spain’s government lost a vote in parliament to change regulations for housing rentals on Tuesday, dealing the ruling Socialists a setback as they try to cobble together support to pass a national budget. The far-left Podemos (“We Can”) party voted no, because it said the government decree didn’t do enough to limit the cost of rental properties, specifically by not empowering local governments to apply rent ceilings.Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez heads a minority government and will need Podemos’s support, along with that of several smaller parties, to pass his budget. If he fails to pass a budget, Sanchez will be under pressure to call an early election instead of seeing out the legislative term through 2020.Spain has endured a major increase in the price of housing rentals recently. The Associated Press
